Selecting a Landscape Contractor
Navigating the Process: A Guide to Selecting the Right Landscape Contractor for Your Property
When it comes to finding a reliable and professional landscape contractor in Seattle, it can be a daunting task. With so many options available, it can be difficult to know which contractor to choose for your landscaping needs. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help you find the best landscape contractor in Seattle.
First and foremost, it’s important to choose a landscape contractor that has a good reputation in the Seattle area. You can do this by reading online reviews, asking for recommendations from friends and family, and checking the contractor’s credentials. A reputable landscape contractor will have a portfolio of their work and be able to provide references from past clients.
Another important factor to consider when choosing a landscape contractor is their level of experience. A contractor with years of experience will have the knowledge and skills necessary to complete your landscaping project to the highest standard. They will also be able to offer a wide range of services, from design to installation and maintenance.
When it comes to the services offered by a landscape contractor, it’s essential to choose a contractor that can provide a comprehensive range of services. This includes design, installation, and maintenance of your landscaping. A good contractor will be able to work with you to create a personalized design that meets your needs and fits within your budget. They will also be able to install the landscaping and provide ongoing maintenance to keep it looking great.
Lastly, it’s important to choose a landscape contractor that offers a fair and competitive price for their services. While it’s always tempting to go for the cheapest option, it’s important to remember that you get what you pay for. A good contractor will be transparent about their pricing and provide a detailed estimate for your project.
By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to finding the best landscape contractor in Seattle. Whether you’re looking to install a new garden, create an outdoor living space, or simply maintain your existing landscaping, a professional landscape contractor will be able to help you achieve your goals. So why wait? Start searching for the perfect landscape contractor today!
Types of Landscaping Companies
Landscaping is incredibly diverse. When thinking about companies there are many things to consider. Here are a few things to consider when evaluating a landscaping company.
Size of the company
When thinking of the size of the company, there are three main categories:
1. Small: These companies have very little overhead, they might be run out of somebody’s home, they may not even pay taxes. These companies have a huge variance often they are unprofessional and inconsistent. But, on occasion you will find a very skilled individual that hasn’t yet built their company or never wants to grow their company, they enjoy doing the actual work. This can be great value, but hard to find and typically the value doesn’t last as the companies grows and/or raises rates.
2. Medium: These companies tend to be established, have systems in place, have some overhead (an office, designers, customer services representatives, etc.) They tend to be the most consistent and highest quality, sometimes they are the most expensive because they offer elite services, other times they are reasonably priced.
3. Large: These companies often have quality wain as it is very difficult to scale significant quality, they tend to offer all of the services and do an exceptional job and commercial maintenance and commercial construction. They also tend to be financially driven so are more willing to use unsustainable practices that are cheaper.
Commercial vs. Residential
Something to consider when selecting for a landscaper. Are they primarily a commercial focused company or residential? Commercially focused companies tend to optimize for things businesses need, spraying, larger equipment, processing contracts, etc.
If you are a homeowner that expertise is not valuable, but if you are a commercial building having somebody that is able to navigate your procurement procedures is a wonderful advantage. These advantages span both maintenance as well as construction.
If you are a small HOA, townhome complex or some small multi-unit building, both types of companies will work well for you as your property may share more in common with a homeowner than a large commercial property.
Maintenance (Yard Care) vs a project
Are you looking for ongoing care, a one time project or both? It is good to understand if the landscaper has an expertise. In my experience the majority of landscaping companies emphasize ongoing care or projects. These types of services require different skills and personnel – customer service manager vs project manager and designer.
With that being said, there are companies that do focus on both, making those companies are essentially two business in one. Seattle Sustainable Landscapes is one of those companies – we have crews that only do yard care and we have crews that only do construction.
Quality of Service
What quality of service are you looking for? There are three levels of care in terms of yard care (maintenance):
- Elite Care: these are master gardeners taking immaculate care of a property with formal training and several years of experience
- Middle Tier: This tier is easiest to describe by being not 1 or 3 – it is in between! Power tools are used, but also hand pruning and hand weeding is done. We at Seattle Sustainable Landscapes offer this middle tier of service.
- Mow, blow and go: Only power tools are used, mower, blower, hedger, edger.
There are different costs associated with these levels of care and you may only want to pay for the level of care that fits your budget.
This same breakdown can be used on the project side of things.
What quality of service are you looking for? In terms of yard care. I like to discuss the three levels of care in terms of projects
- Elite Design/Build Firms: These are companies with a $100K minimum project. They are ones that get the contract to build a new outdoor kitchen for our Seattle Billionaires.
- Middle Tier: Again, this tier is easiest to describe by being not 1 or 3. We offer quality work, formal processes, skilled designers, and more.
- Cheap Contractors: This tier cuts corners, installs pavers with a one inch base instead of 6 inches, installs fence posts that have direct soil contact and rot out quickly.
Seattle Sustainable Landscapes offers the middle tier service level. We are a professional company with award winning projects that is not exclusive to the most elite clientele. If you are only looking for the cheapest bid, that is not us.

Selecting a landscaping contractor can be a daunting task, and it’s not uncommon for homeowners and business owners to have a few fears when making this decision. Some of the most common fears include:

Establishing Trust with Your Landscaping Service Provider
Even with a well-structured sustainable landscape design process, there are still many factors in becoming comfortable with a landscaper. Here steps that we take to build trust with a homeowner:
- Communication: Clearly and accurately communicate with the homeowner about the design process, timelines, budgets, and any changes or updates.
- Seek input and feedback: Involve the homeowner in the design process by asking for their input and feedback and taking their preferences and concerns into account.
- Provide references and examples of past work: Share references and examples of past work to give the homeowner an idea of the designer’s style and level of experience.
- Follow through on commitments: Meet deadlines and deliver on promised work and be responsive and timely in addressing any issues or concerns. There are times that we do fixed bid proposals and other the project is better suited for a structured estimate (more common for repairs and rehabilitation efforts)
- Be transparent: Be open and transparent about costs, materials, and any potential challenges or delays that may arise.
By following these steps, we hope to build trust with a homeowner and create a positive working relationship as your partner in landscape design, installation and yard care. Here are more thoughts about selecting the ideal landscaping partner

From Our Clients

“This has been my favorite home improvement project. This company literally made me a yard where there previously was overgrowth, concrete, large stumps and rocks. They were able to complete the project on time and their cost was much more reasonable than others I interviewed. The project lead Fernando was hard working and communicative. The owner David (and Jeff previously) as well as the GM Chris all stayed in touch throughout the project. I would definitely use them for other projects in the future”

“The team put in an irrigation system in our front and back yard, cleaned everything up and added many new plants to the sunny and shady areas around our home. The owner was very personable, explained everything well and did exactly what he said he was going to do. He was fantastic to work with. His team was wonderful, super hard workers, and very friendly. They helped create color and beauty in every nook and cranny of our yard. My husband and I are very thankful we used this company.”

“Happy with my choice. I had a very small townhouse backyard that was a bit of a mess (low quality builder-grade plantings) and had somewhat of an idea what to do with it. They provided good advice and the final result turned out very well. Finished ahead of schedule too! One year later and I'm still happy with the result. I definitely won't forget the attention and responsiveness of this company. Thanks a bunch! ”
